Our model
Democratic schools have been around for over a hundred years. A.S. Neil started Summerhill School back in 1921 and it still operates to this day. Nowadays, there are estimated to be over three hundred democratic schools worldwide. Tens of thousands of graduates testify to the effectiveness of this model. Our time-tested educational approach rests on three pillars.
Self-Directed Education
We are advocates of self-directed education. Our students choose what, when, and how they learn based on their interests. We won’t have required classes, tests, grades, or homework. Learning happens in everything we do, whether that is through play, conversation, tinkering with materials, or projects. Unleashing the natural curiosity in every child is a superpower that helps them take ownership of their lives.
Shared Governance
Both students and staff have an equal say in the running of the school. Students and staff will resolve issues themselves or go to our School Court. This School Court consists of one staff member and at least two students. The School Court is held accountable by our School Meeting. During our weekly School Meeting, new rules and proposals can be voted on. This process allows students to improve their communication skills, advocate for themselves, and understand what it is like to live in a democracy.
Age-Mixing
Age-mixing is the final pillar. Students can interact with others across age groups. This means younger students can learn a lot from the older students. For older students, the benefits are even greater as they learn to communicate clearly, act as role models, and discover gaps in their own knowledge.
